Check the law before you buy. E-scooter rules are set by states and cities and vary widely. Example: California Vehicle Code 21235 limits motorised scooters to 15 mph, requires a valid driver's licence or instruction permit, requires a helmet for riders under 18, and bans riding on sidewalks except to enter or leave adjacent property. Segway's US store notes that models with a top speed above 20 mph are not shipped to New York State. The CPSC published a proposed mandatory safety standard for lithium-ion batteries in micromobility products on 24 June 2026 (comments closed 24 August 2026). Product pages should tell buyers to check their state and city rules.
